Title: A FEASIBILITY STUDY OF GAS TURBINE POWER AUGMENTATION
Authors: Amran Othman
Abstract: Over the past 20 years, the gas turbine (GT) has become one of the popular
technologies for new electric-power generation projects. In this new millennium,
that dominance is expected to grow, as GT becomes the attraction for a variety of
advanced power-generation cycles namely the Combined Cycle Plant (CCP) and the
Integrated Gasification Combined Cycle (IGCC). Their compactness, high power to
weight ratio, and ease of installation has made them a popular prime mover.
Improvements in hot section materials, cooling technologies, and aerodynamics have
allowed increases in firing temperatures. Consequently, thermal efficiencies are
currently very attractive, with simple cycle efficiencies ranging between 32 % and
42% and combined cycle efficiencies reaching close to the 50% mark as mentioned
by Brooks [15]. The newly planted CCP at Tunku Jaafar Power Station (TJPS) TNB
which was commissioned in 2006 has an average thermal efficiency of 49% [1]
which is presently among the most efficient plant in Malaysia.
